What is BMR?
A BMR is your basal metabolic rate. This rate refers to the number of calories you burn at rest. The BMR calculator gives you your basal metabolic rate in a easy to ready format. So what can cause you to burn calories at rest?
- Beating heart
- Breathing
- Maintaining body temperature
- Digestion
- Plus many more
Why do men have a higher BMR than women?
When using this BMR calculator you will see that men have a higher value for BMR than women. So why is this? Well men typically have less body fat then women. Therefore, the assumption can be made that they have a greater amount of muscle. This greater proportion of muscle mass leads to an increase in calories burnt at rest. Men typically weigh more than women too, you will find that the more you weigh the more calories you burn at rest to maintain body function. Following all of this, males have a different hormonal make-up to their female counterparts; this also has a part to play in why males burn more calories.
What factors affect BMR?
- Age – As you get older your metabolism slows down along with other aspects of your body. Therefore you don’t need as many calories as you did when you were younger.
- Gender – As previously mentioned Men have a higher BMR due to a variety of reasons.
- Body Composition – The more body fat you have you often have a smaller BMR. People with a BMI over 30 will have some of the lowest BMR scores. This is due to their internal organs being insulated by their body. Therefore, the body needs to use less energy to maintain the body temperature.
